What You Need to Know About Advanced Polymer Decking

sustainable decking

Terms like “PVC decking,” “composite decking,” and “polymer decking” are sometimes used interchangeably by industry pros, despite differences between them. However, they are all types of engineered decking you can choose for your home project. While the decking industry has grown tremendously since the introduction of composite decking a few decades ago, the core benefits remain the same:

  • Easy to maintain
  • Aesthetics that last without painting or staining
  • Exceptional durability

Unsure about the difference between each option? We’re here with easy-to-understand explanations to help explain the benefits of Polymer decking, how it relates to composite decking, and which option is right for your new deck build or deck renovation.

What Is PVC Decking?

PVC decking is decking made from polyvinyl chloride (a type of plastic), with no organic material, such as wood flour. Because there’s no organic material, PVC is engineered to avoid one of the biggest pitfalls of organic decking — moisture invasion, which can lead to mould, mildew, and rot.

It’s not unusual to see TimberTech Advanced Polymer decking included in general “PVC” or “composite” categories. But before we dive into how our innovative technology sets us apart, let’s quickly compare the different composite and Polymer decking types available.

PVC and Composite Decking — More Than Just Two Categories

Uncapped Composite

Made from a mix of recycled wood and plastic, it’s more durable than wood. But because there is no protective capping, it is highly vulnerable to moisture damage.

Capped Composite

Also made from a mix of recycled wood and plastic, this composite is protected from moisture by a 3- or 4-sided polymer cap. This seals out moisture, resists fading, and locks in the rich colour.

Polymer

Made from 100% engineered polymer material with no wood filler, PVC decking typically has a 3- or 4-sided cap and is lighter in weight than wood or composite decking. While early PVC decking featured a hollow core and plastic-y looks and feel, many of today’s options have a solid core and improved aesthetics.

TimberTech Advanced Polymer

Our Advanced Polymer Decking innovates far beyond traditional PVC, offering a wide range of authentic wood looks and textures. Engineered from 100% polymers, it features a 4-sided cap made from high-performance and an ultra-durable solid core made from a blend of virgin and recycled polymers. Advanced Polymer does not contain any wood or organic fillers—which can compromise long-term performance—in the core or cap.
